Handel's Messiah- Deddington

Review taken from Deddington News May 2006

Mention of Handel's great oratorio, Messiah, these days is likely to conjure up images of massed choirs in great halls, or a "scratch" performance precariously based on a quick run-through a few hours beforehand. Neither was the case for the audience in Deddington Church on 25 March 2006. We were treated to an inspired performance from Akeman Voices, a chamber choir of 17 singers, with 4 soloists and organist Jeremy Meager. Regularly rehearsing under the skilled direction of their founder Martin Quinn, has produced a skilled ensemble, manifestly at home with a classical repertoire, and ideally suited to an intimate, audience embracing performance of Handel's magnificent music.

The choruses were delivered at a lively, yet sensitive pace with clear articulation and pleasing dynamic contrasts. All four soloists, Keren Davis (soprano), David Wholey (alto), James Scarlett (tenor) and Robert Williams (bass) had fine voices and used them to good effect to lead us through the drama of Christ's life. David Wholey, was particularly impressive. Together, choir and soloists gave us an uplifting evening.

The otherwise informative programme notes failed to acknowledge the choir members by name. Their enthusiasm and skill showed them to be anything but anonymous.
